DES MOINES — Last season was a fairy tale for Northern Iowa — right until the playoffs.
The Panthers thumped Iowa State and Drake on the road by a combined score of 69-20. They reached No. 1 in the Football Championship Subdivision poll, helped head coach Mark Farley earn national FCS coach of the year honors and became the first team in the 23-year history of the Gateway Conference to record a perfect regular season.
And none of it meant much last December.
Quarterback Joe Flacco and the Delaware Blue Hens stunned Northern Iowa at the UNI-Dome in the FCS quarterfinals, robbing the Panthers of arguably the program’s best-ever shot at a national title.
Bouncing back from that crushing playoff loss will be key for Northern Iowa this season, and all signs indicate the Panthers can do just that.
