Freeman frank about reasons behind transfer
IOWA CITY (AP) — Iowa’s only all-Big Ten Conference basketball selection from last season is leaving the team saying coach Todd Lickliter didn’t treat him with respect during a post-season meeting.
Tony Freeman, a junior third-team all-league selection by the coaches last season, said he had been working out with his teammates at Carver-Hawkeye Arena for the past two weeks and even signed an apartment lease for next school year. But, he said things went badly during a recent meeting with Lickliter.
‘‘He asked me about my grades, then asked me (if I ever thought) about transferring,’’ Freeman said in a telephone interview with The Des Moines Register after being granted an official release of his scholarship. ‘‘When I heard that, I was dumbfounded. I said, ‘What? Why would you ask that question?’’’
Freeman, an off-guard who played point out of necessity, can transfer to a lower-division school and gain immediate eligibility.
