Roger Gilbert, project manager for the school construction project, had nothing but good news to report to the Estherville Lincoln Central Community School District Board of Education Monday.

Gilbert reviewed progress on the project, including both the Demoney addition and the new middle school. In the past few weeks, the precast walls have risen on the southwest side of Maniece, changing the landscape from rough earth a little over a month ago.

Superintendent Dick Magnuson noted that the construction committee meets noon the first and third Tuesday of each month.

In other business at Monday’s meeting, Magnuson noted increased food prices due to transportation.

The board approved an asbestos abatement bid for the Maniece building of $68,900 from EPS of Graettinger. Approximately 14,000 square feet of glue containing asbestos needs to be removed and disposed of from the building. Magnuson said the money could come from delaying Roosevelt demolition and using the money instead for the asbestos abatement.

The board approved tech prep and college prep agreements with Iowa Lakes Community College. Magnuson said the agreement helps students get dual credit and ELC High School Principal Frank Christenson said it appears that more students will be taking classes this fall.

In other business, the board:

n Approved the 2008-09 school calendar with a Sept. 2 start date and June 2 finish date for teachers.

n Approved the appointment of Nancy Anderson to the Empowerment Board.

n Set a public hearing for 5:10 p.m. June 9 on sale of the Lincoln property.

n Approved a student teaching agreement with Dana College, Blair, Neb.

n Received a report from Adam Wolff of Met Life on 403b annuity plans.

n Received a list of legislative priorities that members will review and rate and submit to the Iowa Association of School Boards.

n Approved a locker bid from Iowa Direct for $157,185 and a food service equipment bid from Martin Bros. for $135,114.25.

n Held a hearing and approved a budget amendment for the current year to increase instructional revenues by $281,303 and support services by $143,353. The reason for the increase in both areas is grant receipts and increase in miscellaneous income.

n Approved the consent agenda which included hires, resignations, and transfers.

n Held a closed session for a collective bargaining/strategy session.
