Emmet County ahead in ag program sign-up

February 21, 2009
By Michael Tidemann - Staff Writer

Between 40 and 50 percent of Emmet County producers have signed up for ag programs, putting the county ahead of other area counties, according to Larry Niles, Emmet County FSA director.

Niles said more information will be available on the ACRE program in April. However, he encourages all producers to sign up for the regular farm program now and ACRE if they desire.

The Average Crop Revenue Election program is slightly different from previous farm programs and focuses on farm revenue instead of just prices. However, the new program follows a complex set of procedures involving both farm and state-level average revenues to determine whether a farmer is eligible to receive payments.

The deadline for signup for programs is June 1.

Right now, how much rain we'll have through the growing season is probably as big of a question as any that producers might have over the coming months. While California is in a drought cycle, as well as many other parts of the West, Niles said Iowa seems to bee looking pretty decent for moisture.

"Right now most of the producers feel we have adequate moisture," Niles said.

Typically, March through June see good moisture. What comes in August can have a big impact on yields.

"August our last couple years has been a critical time," Niles said.
