How now, brown cow and where would we be without you? Here's something to "moo" about-today is Cow Appreciation Day.
While the celebration is low-key and light-hearted, we in Emmet County need to be grateful to the beef cows who graze away and also to their owners who devote much time, energy and financial stability to the herds.
Where would humankind be without the pleasant, endearing mammal that provides us with:
n All cuts of meat including those delicious hamburgers, succulent steaks, perfect prime rib, delectable roasts, juicy ribs, and those ever-popular organ meats of liver, kidney, tongue, etc.
n Gelatin products.
n Medications.
n Leather and suede jackets, boots, pants, purses, shoes, belts, etc.
n Lubricants and fluids created from the cow's fatty acids of inedible beef fats and proteins.
n Other products derived from the cow include industrial cleaners, fertilizers, printing ink and high gloss for magazines.
n Automobile and bicycle tires that contain stearic acid from the cow. It helps the rubber hold its shape under continuous surface friction.
n Asphalt on roads contains a binding agent derived from beef fat.
To celebrate the occasion, don't hesitate to fire up the grill and cook up your favorite kind of beef just the way you like it.
If that is not an option, you can always hug and kiss a cow.
If the second option sounded "udderly" ridiculous, you can fill your glass with cold, nutritious milk and toast the animal who needs so little, but gives so much.
