Student succumbs during climb up turbine

A 60-year-old student succumbed Friday after losing conscousness during a wind turbine climb with his classmates at the Estherville campus of Iowa Lakes Community College Friday morning.

The individual was in the middle of his assent when he became unconscious, according to those on the scene. He was given CPR immediately by Al Zeitz, director of the program, and two students. Wind turbine students are first aid certified.

Medical personnel were contacted and responded rapidly.

The student was lowered by Zeitz and instructor Craig Evert to the main level where ambulance personnel took over. Also, instructors Doug Zemler and Doug Enger were at the turbine.

The male student was transferred by ambulance to the hospital where he died. The name of the student is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

"We're deeply saddened," said college president Valerie Newhouse. "Many thanks to our students, staff and Estherville emergency and law enforcement personnel for the quick response and assistance."

Darin Moeller, executive dean of the Estherville campus said those involved did a commendable job.

"Our students and faculty who were on the scene precisely followed our emergency procedures and handled a difficult situation in the best manner possible," said Moeller.

"College counselors are working with our students should any of them desire counseling," Moeller added.
