Who says hard work doesn't have its rewards.

The Iowa Lakes Community College Board of Trustees Tuesday voted to name the Spirit Lake campus building after Jack Tatman, a founding member of the board whose term ended with the beginning of Tuesday's meeting.

In bringing the issue to the floor, Jan Lund of Estherville, the new board president, noted that the board awards committee had recommended naming the building for Tatman. "He certainly has had the best interests of the college at heart," Lund said.

Trustee Pat Kibbie moved and Jim Miller, voting telephonically, seconded the suggestion and the board approved.

Among the trustees voting unanimously to name the building after Tatman was Mike Prior, who upset Tatman in last month's election and effectively ending Tatman's continuous, 42-year board tenure.

The board agreed to give Delaine Hiney, executive director of facilities management, permission to pursue studying the need for an additional dormitory.

"We've been actually over capacity in our dorms," Hiney said, noting 285 students housed in dorms designed for 278 capacity.

Val Newhouse, college president, said when student issues arise there aren't any options to relocate students, something she said could possibly affect student retention. Newhouse said funds would come from a designated building fund generated from dormitory revenues.

The board also agreed to pursue revised specifications for the construction tech building at the Emmetsburg campus.

Hiney recounted that the board had elected earlier to reject all bids after a July 20 bid opening. She said she would like to rebid the project with the main bid for the entire building shell with alternative bids for the building contents.

In the financial report, Bob L'Heureux, chief financial officer, said expenditures were down and revenues up - a good scenario considering the governor's 10 percent across-the-board budget cut.

The board also approved Secure Benefits of Spirit Lake as its new life insurance provider.

The board tabled a recommendation for sale of renewable energy credits from the college wind turbine pending further study.

The board approved second reading of two policies, Series 103 and Series 130 addressing trustee terms and relocating trustee meetings to accommodate persons with disabilities.

The board also heard about progress in the We Believe Building a Strong Future, the internal scholarship fundraising campaign, in the foundation update from Jolene Rogers, executive director of institutional advancement.

In the Iowa Lakes Report, resident and graduate assistants from the five campuses introduced themselves to the board.

Taking the oath of office after last month's elections were Pat Kibbie representing District 6 or the Emmetsburg and adjacent area, Mike Prior representing District 3 or the extended Spirit Lake area and Bob Jennings representing District 7 in Kossuth County. Jennings also unseated a longterm incumbent in the Sept. 8 election, Lynn Kueck, who had served on the board for 32 years.

The board approved Miller as its new vice president.
