Daily News Editorial

POSTED: October 21, 2009

The motorcycles roaring into Estherville just before three o'clock Sunday were an impressive sight.

Yes, the well-traveled person may be familiar with the site of a large group of bikers traveling the highways-perhaps on the way to Sturgis, S.D. for that community's annual biker rally.

But the sight of those bikers arriving in Estherville is rare-and these had a more noble cause-helping out another.

As representatives of the Shayla Bee Foundation, they came to Estherville to make a donation to Estherville Lincoln Central senior Mike Radig

The Shayla Bee Fund was organized specifically to help "responsible, working-class families" with children in a "medical crisis."

The Shayla Bee Fund will accept donations of money, services, materials or medical equipment from any individual or group organized event.

The fund is named after Shayla, the daughter of Lindsay and Carlos Perez and granddaughter of Jerry and Lucille Faulkner, all of Spencer.

It was started in 2006 and according to Jerry Faulkner, getting the word out about the group took a couple years just in Spencer.

Generally, the Shayla Bee Fund intends to assist responsible, surrounding area families with:

n Medical/Travel Related Expenses

n Medical Equipment

n Home Handicap Accessibility Modifications

n Wish Come True Grants

n Volunteer Services

It serves the Lakes Area including Ayrshire, Lake Park, Terril, Milford, Ruthven, Fostoria, Rossie, Spencer, Hartley, Sioux Rapids, Webb, Everly, Gillett Grove, Royal, Marathon, Peterson, Rembrandt, Albert City, Linn Grove, Laurens, Greenville, Sutherland. The donation to Mike Radig was the first in Estherville.

If you know a family in need with a child in medical crisis, contact Faulkner at (712) 240-3664. Tax-deductible contributions can be sent to the Shayla Bee Fund, 612 Fourth Ave. S.E., Spencer, IA 51301.
