Estherville: A glimpse into the town's past
Rosewood Manor publishes local historyBy Michael Tidemann - Staff Writer
A Glimpse of the Past, a collection of stories by Rosewood Manor residents, staff and family members, is due for publication next week.
The book, which is a compilation of 125 memories of residents, friends and families, will be on sale at Fareway, Hy-Vee and Cool Beans from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 27 and Saturday, Nov. 28. The book is also available at Rosewood Manor throughout the year or by calling Rosewood Manor at 712-362-3594. The price is $20 plus shipping, if applicable.
According to Dee McDonald, Rosewood Manor activities director, the inspiration for the book came after receiving response from the weekly feature Rosewood Memory which began in the Daily News this past February.
The book is edited by Karen (Mrs. Richard) Hansen of Estherville and features artwork of local venues by Marvel Houge and Candi Iwen.
McDonald said the book includes memories of events such as the Blizzard of '36, a local creamery, former businesses and activities such as barn dances.
"We thought it would be neat if we could get the community involved," McDonald said. "We've got a fortune of memories. It's just like everything is falling together. It just has so much meaning we thought to everybody around here."
The book features a boy from the 1930s surrounded by a pile of books - appropriate for the era during which many of the events were depicted.
A third of the profits will go to the City of Estherville and another two-thirds to an outdoor safe area for Rosewood residents, McDonald said.
The book has a mission statement, "For a clear vision of the future, take a look at where we've been."
McDonald said copies will be printed as determined by demand. An initial press run of 100 copies will be available and McDonald hopes to sell 650 copies - one for every resident in Estherville.
