Compensation board determines annual recommendation
by David Swartz - Managing EditorThe Emmet County Compensation Board met Wednesday evening to make its annual determination on what elected officials should receive in raises for the 2010-11 fiscal year.
The compensation board, which consists of a representative appointed by each county official, couldn't pass a motion to raise all salaries by 2 percent.
After more discussion, the board set specific dollar increases for each of the elected officials.
The board will recommend the following increases to the Emmet County Board of Supervisors- $1,500 for the county attorney, $3,000 for the sheriff, $1,000 each for the auditor, recorder and treasurer and $500 for the supervisors.
Of the $389,307 in salaries, the recommended $9,900 represents a 2.54 percent increase of the existing $389,307 combined compensation for elected officials.
The compensation board generally makes its determination by reviewing salary information available from other counties, the City of Estherville, Consumer Price Index information, expected county health insurance cost increases and general economic conditions.
Last year, the compensation board recommended a 6 percent increase for the county attorney and 5 percent for other county officials.
However, the Emmet County Board of Supervisors approved lower amounts of 4.2 percent for the county attorney and 3.5 percent for other elected officials.
The supervisors have the option of accepting the compensation board's recommendation or decreasing the mount of the salary adjustments. Supervisors cannot increase pay above the amount recommended by the compensation board.
Members of the county compensation board are Barb Alig, David Forsyth, Jay Gunderson, Ron Menendez, Kevin Sander, Bob Schacherer and Lori Utecht.
