Storm kept county crews hopping

By Michael Tidemann - Staff Writer
POSTED: December 30, 2009

As expected, Emmet County Engineer Roger Patocka's road report Tuesday about mainly about plowing snow.

Lots of snow.

Patocka said crews had been plowing every day since before Christmas, with snow continuing to blow in quite a bit on Monday. He said crews were called back when the storm was at its worst. That was because winds brought zero visibility at times.

"They've been in the ditch a lot," Patocka said of some road crew members.

Patocka said crews have also been repairing equipment. "It's been a constant process of getting everything going," he said.

Patocka said the county's new John Deere grader had been down for a week and a half. He said the company that had sold the county the grader had proposed a swap with another grader with fewer hours. The other alternative would be that it would take two weeks for mechanics to determine the problem with the grader which apparently had starting problems and loss of power.

"If they can't fix the machine they bought, what's to say the other one won't do the same thing in two months," said supervisor Jim Jenson.

In another matter, the board approved the appointment of Gaylen Zeman of Ringsted to the Emmet County Zoning Commission effective July 1.
