Indian boys earn top three spots, Baldwin takes first

OKOBOJI - Individually the Spirit Lake cross country team was on fire at its home invite on Tuesday, unfortunately, the Indians struggled to find the necessary depth to eclipse Unity Christian as both Indians teams placed second.

Alec Baldwin paced the boys team as the senior crossed the line in 16 minutes, 2 seconds for a first place finish while teammates Keith Byers and Will Norris finished directly behind him in 16:07 and 16:24, respectively.

Kyle Anderson was the next Indian to finish as he crossed the finish line in 18:22 (30th) and Gabe McCoy rounded out the scoring with a 38th place finish in 18:58.

Also running for Spirit Lake was Zach Skopec and Drew Brevik who finished in 18:59 and 19:12, respectively.

Despite having the top three runners in the meet, the Indians fell 13 points short as Unity Christian won with 61 points.

The Indians were followed by Hull Western Christian with 94, Storm?Lake 102, Spencer 112, MOC/Floyd Valley 138, Sheldon 182 and Emmetsburg 199.

The Spirit Lake girls were paced by Briana Brunsvold who took third place in 15:48 and K.J. Veldman who placed finished directly behind her teammate in 16:08.

Dondi Schmidt finished 10th in 16:53, Jessie Kabel placed 17th in 17:11 and Justine Heinitz rounded out the scoring with a 28th place finish in 17:57.

Liz Skogerboe placed 29th in 18:00 and Dana Potter placed 39th in 19:02.

Unity Christian won with a total of 43 points.

They were followed by Spirit Lake with 62, Spencer 80, Estherville Lincoln Central-Armstrong-Ringsted 85, HWC 115, MOC/FV 155, Sheldon 162, Emmetsburg 241 and Cherokee 243.

In JV action, the Spirit Lake boys won with a total of 53 points.

They were followed by Storm Lake with 59, Spencer 136, HWC 142 and MOC/FV with 157.

Daniel Stover led the boys with a fourth place finish in 19:06.

He was followed by D.Jay Gjerde (fifth) in 19:07, Jack Goodlaxson (10th) 19:15, C.J. Kent (15th) 19:32, Ryan Lohse (19th) 19:54, Tanner Goetsch (22nd) 19:56, Jackson Walsh (28th) 20:05, Corey Potter (33rd) 20:33, Brice Voss (53rd) 21:50 and Grant Schuchert (67th) 22:52.

On the girls side, Hayley Welch finished sixth in 19:06.

She was followed by Morgan Walz (16th) in 20:32 and Kate O'brien (26th) in 23:17.
