To the Editor:
Thank you to all who attended the Respite Angels benefit at the Duhigg Center. Thanks to all the people that donated food or time to help with this event. Respite Angels is a 501c3 dedicated to providing caregiver relief to family member who are caring for their loved ones, who are suffering from an illness or injury. To stay focused and rested, the caregiver needs to revitalize him or herself with personal time.
So what is respite care? Respite care provides temporary relief to those who are caring for a loved one. Even though many families take great joy in providing care to their loved ones so that they can remain at home, the physical, emotional and financial consequences for the family caregiver can be overpowering without some support such as respite.
Without respite care, families can suffer economically and emotionally, caregivers themselves may face serious health and social issues as a result of the stress associated with continuous care.
By age 50, 28 percent of individuals are caregivers, and over two-third of caregivers in the United States have jobs in addition to caring for another person. By having to focus on jobs and loved ones, caregivers often undergo enormous amounts of stress, which can lead to serious health conditions including heart disease and diabetes. This is where Respite Angels, Inc. looks to help improve our local communities while maintaining a focused, loving care for individuals in need of caregiver assistance.
By offering caregiver assistance, Respite Angels is helping to reduce caregiver stress, which leads to better care for individuals in need. Studies continue to show that respite care helps families keep loved ones home for longer periods of time, which helps elongate the life expectancy of both the patient and the caregiver.
