WALLINGFORD - Funeral services for Harold E. Rustad, 84, of Estherville will be held 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2011, at Wallingford Lutheran Church with Pastor Christine Lang officiating. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at Henry-Olson Funeral Chapel in Estherville. Interment will be at Wallingford Lutheran Cemetery with military graveside rites by Wallingford American Legion and VFW Post 3388 and American Legion Post 91.
He died Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011, at Avera Holy Family Health Hospice in Estherville.
Harold Eugene Rustad, the son of Lewis and Jenett (Gunderson) Rustad, was born Sept. 27, 1927, in rural Wallingford.

He received his education in rural country school near Wallingford and Graettinger High School and received his diploma from La Mesa, Calif. High School. He served in the United States Army during World War II. Following his honorable discharge, Harold returned to Iowa and worked at International Harvestor in Wallingford as a parts man. Later he moved to Blue Earth, Minn., where he continued working as a parts man.
On Dec. 17, 1950, Harold was united in marriage to DeLaine Henrickson in Wallingford. In January, Harold received notification that he was being called up for active duty for the Korean Conflict. He served in Korea for 18 months. Upon his honorable discharge he returned to the Wallingford area and began farming. In the winter months he enjoyed traveling to Texas, which the couple did for 23 years. He liked attending the music jams where DeLaine played her piano accordion. Most important to Harold was spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was an active member of Wallingford Lutheran Church. Harold served on the Wallingford Cooperative Elevator Board. He was a lifetime member of Wallingford American Legion and VFW Post 3388 in Estherville.
Left to cherish Harold's memory are his wife of 60 years, DeLaine, of Estherville; his children, Roger Rustad and his wife, Ardith, of Spencer and Sharon Paul and her husband, John, of Swea City, Iowa; grandchildren, Megan, Monica and Mallory Rustad, Jeffrey Paul and his wife, Kristen, of Ogallala, Neb. and Ashlea Sonius and her husband, Jon, of Spencer and great-grandchildren, Madison and Kelsi Sonius and Atley and Bricker Paul. Harold is also survived by a sister, Janice Sherkenback, and her husband, Wayne, of Murrieta, Calif.; sisters-in-law, Lenora Rustad of Yreka, Calif. and Darlene Rustad of Oskaloosa and many nieces and nephews. Preceding Harold in death were his parents; brothers, Vernon, Lowell, Arnold and Orville and sisters, Lois and Arlene.
