Happy Friday the 13th

January 13, 2012
Estherville Daily News

You've seen the movies, but did you know the really scary story about Friday the 13th?

Actually, psychologists estimate as many as 21 million Americans suffer fromparaskevidekatriaphobia, fear of Friday the 13th.

Some sources say the fear of this rather unusual holiday goes back to ancient Rome. Indeed, a number of religions and traditions revere the number 12 - the 12 disciples in Christianity, 12 lives of reincarnation, the 12 months of the year, an even dozen and so on.

If you fear Friday the 13th, this may be your, well, unlucky year, since there will be three in 2012. Of course, if you use the holiday to celebrate horror flicks, then it's actually a lucky year for you. So plan for a Friday the 13th film fest tonight - and twice more this year!

Some people actually report having better luck on Friday the 13th because other people are so preoccupied with the possibility of their own bad luck.

Whatever your interpretation might be of Friday the 13th, rest assured that it's just another day. And, like other days, it's what you make it.
