Feb. 6-10 is National School Counseling Week, a time to recognize the contribution that professional school counselors make to American schools. National School Counseling Week highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career.
"School counselors work with all students to remove barriers to learning by addressing students' academic concerns, personal/social skills and career awareness in post-secondary options," said Kwok-Sze Wong, Ed.D., American School Counselor Association executive director. "Comprehensive school counseling programs help to increase student achievement and provide a much-needed resource for students, parents, teachers and administrators. School counselors are integral to student success."
More than 29,000 school counselors nationwide will be participating in the week's festivities. Many school counselors will be hosting special events and activities to call attention to the myriad benefits of a comprehensive school counseling program.
School counseling is one of those special professions in which professionals share one unique goal - to improve the lives of children by providing a safe, caring environment. These are some of the most dedicated people you will fine - not dedicated simply to their job but, probably even more important, dedicated to the children they serve.
If you have a child in school, find out who his or her school counselor is. Establish a relationship. Ask what you can do to make your child's school counselor's job easier.
And, above all, thank your child's school counsel for an excellent job well done.
Every last person in the profession deserves it.
