NSKAR to become North Union Warriors

School boards must give final approval

February 24, 2012
By Michael Tidemann - Staff Writer , Estherville Daily News

ARMSTRONG - Starting this fall, Armstrong-Ringsted and North Sentral Kossuth athletes will be known as the North Union Warriors.

Matt Berninghaus, A-R principal, said the three districts of Armstrong-Ringsted, North Kossuth and Sentral wanted students to be the major players in making the decision, so all three districts put out suggestion boxes for students to suggest colors, name and mascot. Then 20 student council members from both A-R and NSK met last Friday at Swea City and in three groups came up with three suggestions. After that, students in grades six through 12 votes.

The result was the North Union Warriors with the colors green, black and silver.

Berninghaus said the next step will be a visualization of the mascot. He said that will undoubtedly involve art students - A-R's art instructor is J.D. Speltz of Speltz Studios - and mascot logos will probably be narrowed down to three ideas and the student council will vote again.

"It was pretty unified in what they wanted," Berninghaus said of the students' choices.

Berninghaus said the A-R Board of Education will act on accepting the students' recommendation at its Monday night board meeting and other boards will act on the recommendations later.
