The Armstrong-Ringsted Board of Education Monday night approving hiring current principal Matt Berninghaus as superintendent effective with the start of the 2012 school year on July 1.
Berninghaus replaces Randy Collins who offered his resignation at the same meeting. Collins is taking a combined superintendent's position with Akron-Westfield and West Sioux.
After an hour-long closed session, the board approving offering Berninghaus a two-year contract, He'll be paid $90,000 the first year and $100,000 the second year.
Board president Jim Boyer said by eliminating ad administrative position the district would save $58,000 the first year and $100,000 over two years.
Berninghaus has been with the district for six years - five years of which he has served as an administrator.
"We as a board feel that he's up to the position and we're excited about the future," Boyer said.
Audience member Brian Tigges asked whether the district had to advertise for the superintendent's position, questioning the process.
Collins said the board can hire from within.
Board president Jim Boyer said the A-R, North Kossuth and Sentral would remain independent districts with their whole-grade sharing agreement that starts July 1.
And Jen Von Bank, board vice president, said the district would have to pay more to bring in a superintendent from outside the district.
