Do you have a young child? Do you ever transport your child in a car?
Then you really need to check out the Emmet County Car Seat Safety Event 1-4 p.m. Saturday, April 21 at Estherville Motor Inn at 616 S. Sixth St.
The free event is open to anyone. You can bring in your car seat - preferably installed, so the three certified technicians on hand can determine how you've installed it. If there are problems, they can show you the proper method of installation. They can also check to see whether a child car seat has been recalled or is defective. Replacement seats will be available. There will also be a play area for children.
This is wonderful public service by Estherville Motor Inn which is providing a site for the event and Emmet County Public Health and Avera Holy Family Health which both sent an employee for training. A big thanks also goes to Gene Haukoos who wrote the grant for child safety car seat training and the event.
Just about everyone knows - or should know - that safety car seats are required for children in Iowa. This session will help you make sure those seats are in fact safe and that they're properly installed.
So, please. If you have children, try to attend.
Thanks to volunteers
A big thanks has to go as well to those who turned out Tuesday night to help move picnic tables to campground areas at Fort Defiance State Park. Those participating included Gary Phillips, Friends president; Dave Seylar, vice president; David Huebsch and Dave Guthrie, students in Phillips' environmental studies program at Iowa Lakes Community College; and Ryan and Reed Jensen, who pitched in - and in a big way.
If you would like to join the Friends of Fort Defiance - a group that's recognized far and wide for getting things done in our local state park - sent $10 for individual or family memberships to: Friends of Fort Defiance, P.O. Box 314, Estherville, IA 51334. Or if you'd like to volunteer, just show up either the second or fourth Tuesday of every month at the park lodge southwest of Estherville. Just take County A22 west past Estherville Golf Course to the "T" at A25 then turn left and look for the park sign just off to your left.
You don't have to participate in volunteer projects to be a member and you don't have to be a member to participate in volunteer projects, but the Friends would love for you to do both.
