To the EDN:
Thank you to everyone who made the "Every 15 Minutes" program a great success for the students of ELC High School over the days of April 4th and 5th.
You may or not believe that it takes a village to raise a child, but this was truly a great example of an entire community coming together to stress to our young people the possible dangers and consequences that come with making the decision to drive under the influence.
I would surely leave someone out if I tried to mention every group, organization or individual that made these two days possible (and there were many). But I would like to especially thank Michelle Howing and Brent Shatto for presenting this program to us and for ramrodding the whole show over the 5-6 months it took to bring it to fruition. It was an enormous task and they were enthusiastic and great to work with throughout the process.
Another group that needs to be thanked is the parents of those students who were selected to participate. The students were unaware that they were going to be among the 'living dead' until the grim reaper came for them every 15 minutes during the morning on Wednesday. In the meantime, their parents were asked to write an obituary for their son or daughter. I can only imagine how hard that was to do.
A big thanks also goes out to the great staff at ELC High School as well. I asked them to give up almost two whole days of academic contact with their classes in exchange for an opportunity to reach the students in a most unorthodox manner. They didn't bat an eye and, in fact, shed their share of tears along with the students who were genuinely touched by the events that unfolded.
Finally, I would like to thank all of the students who were attentive and cooperated in the activities over the two days. It was all for them and while we may never know how effective it was in the long run, my hope is that they will reflect on the fact that so many people cared so much about them and that the entire village of Estherville did their part in providing this education for them.
