Friday, May 4 is an important date for Estherville.
That's when the Emmet County Wellness Coalition plans the Walking With a Purpose walk. The plan is to get as many people together to walk main routes throughout Estherville to determine their pedestrian-friendliness.
It's a great project for the Wellness Coalition - the same group that brought the Live Healthy Iowa 100 Day Wellness Challenge to Estherville, which is being coordinated through Avera Holy Family Health and Emmet County Public Health.
Walkers hope to determine barriers to walking, such as sidewalks in disrepair, no sidewalks and other problems.
Following is a schedule for the walk:
n 10 a.m. - Avera Holy Family Hospital walk. Please meet at the front doors of the hospital if you would like to join the walk. They will walk the area north of the hospital, with special attention to the Lincoln Park area.
n 11:15 a.m. - Thorson Park. Meet at the new shelter house area on 15th Street if you would like to participate
n 11:30 a.m. and noon - Regional Wellness Center walks. Groups will walk two different areas near the RWC. If you would like to participate in one or both of the walks please meet in front of the RWC.
n Noon - McKinley area. Meet at the Woody's Pizza parking lot if you would like to participate.
The Estherville Lincoln Central Demoney second-graders and middle-school physical eduction classes will walk an area close to the schools. Their walks will be at various times throughout the day as their class schedules permit.
If you'd like to participate, pick up your Walking With a Purpose checklist from the Daily News at 10 N. Seventh St. between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
