ESTHERVILLE - Funeral services for Elmer Oelkers, 92, of Dodge, Neb., will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2012 at 10 a.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Estherville with Thomas Marth, officiating. Interment with military honors will be in the St. John Lutheran Cemetery at Dunnell, Minn. There will be a visitation on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 from 6-8 p.m. at the Minnick Funeral Chapel in Dodge, Neb., and will continue on Friday, May 18 from 5-7 p.m. at the Henry-Olson Funeral Home in Estherville.
Elmer passed away on Sunday, May 13, 2012, at the Parkview Home in Dodge, Neb.
Elmer John Oelkers was born July 29, 1919 in rural Jackson Co., Minn., to John H. and Antonia (Striemer) Oelkers. He was confirmed at the Union State Line Lutheran Church and attended Petersburg, Minn., Public Schools. On Dec. 25, 1941, he was united in marriage to Gladys Brown. Elmer served in the United States Army from 1942-1946. Upon being honorably discharged he farmed and later worked for the Midland Coop in Jackson, Minn., before retiring. He moved to Dodge in 2004. Elmer was a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church in Dunnell prior to becoming a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Estherville. He also had belonged to the American Legion and was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #900 of Jackson. In his spare time he enjoyed woodworking, spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren, and especially enjoyed teasing his caregivers.
Survivors include-Sons-David and wife Peggy Oelkers of Dodge; Steven and wife Carleen Oelkers of Garner; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren
Elmer was preceded in death by his parents, wife-Gladys in April of 2000, two-brothers-Arnold and Robert Oelkers, and four sisters-Norma Oelkers, Ora Silcox, Leona Olsen and Anna Oelkers.
