I have been following the story on the new UDMO trail. From the start it looked like the project would serve a very few if any pedestrians. I will concede that the trail could serve a small portion of folks west of the tracks and east of the river. Most people that visit UDMO do so by vehicle.
The Friday issue of the Daily News had an article that proclaimed numerous "clients pushing baby strollers under the railroad underpass." Many of us work south of the city and I have been unable to find anyone that has actually seen a pedestrian go under the railroad, much less a baby in a stroller. Personally I travel that route several times a day and have yet to meet even another vehicle in traffic.
Trails are generally a good asset for a community, but lets spend precious dollars where it will benefit most. If safety for people in the east part of town was truely the issue, I would think a trail from South 8th Street West along the old Morrell property would be more appropriate.
