GILMORE CITY - North Union lost its first Cornbelt Conference game of the season as the Warriors split a doubleheader with West Bend-Mallard on Monday.
North Union was in complete control of the first game as Sawyer Doocy pitched a two-hit shutout. He struck out 15 batters, walked one and hit two. Of those 15 strikeouts, 11 were by the bottom four batters in the Wolverines' lineup.
Offensively, the Warriors went to work in the third inning. Brett Deitering drew a leadoff walk. Sawyer Doocy reached on an error as Deitering scored. A second error allowed Doocy to score and allowed Brett Thackery to reach base.
Thackery went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Garrett Johnson.
The fourth inning was highlighted by a three-run home run by Doocy.
At the plate, Garrett Johnson was 2-2 with two RBIs. Evan Hagebock was 1-3, Alex Deitering was 1-4 and Doocy was 1-4 with four RBIs.
In the second game, West Bend-Mallard's Mitch Bonnstetter hit a leadoff home run in the first inning and that was the only run in the game.
The Wolverines' Jason Zinnel struck out 11 batters and gave up just two hits with two walks and a hit batter.
Zach Hurlburt took the loss for he Warriors. He struck out eight batters and gave up five hits and one walk. Thackery pitched the final third of an inning giving up one walk and striking out one batter.
Hagebock had both hits for North Union as he went 2-3.
North Union (16-5 overall, 7-1 in the conference) hosts Central Springs today.
