HULL - Class 3A No. 6 Estherville Lincoln Central scored four runs in the first inning and cruised to a 5-1 victory over Western Christian on Wednesday.
ELC coach Megan Anderson said officials debated whether to play varsity first when the teams arrived and eventually went that route.
"We scored four runs right away, but we need more consistency," she said. "We only had five hits on the night."
Kristen King opened the game as she was hit by a pitch. Macy Dahl laid down a bunt and the Wolfpack defense overthrew first, which allowed the runners to advance to second and third. A bunt by Emily Kirchner scored one run and a single by Kendall Bosch scored another.
Christina Tendal laid down a bunt that the Wolfpack defense couldn't handle. A single by Taylor Lago scored two runs.
Western Christian scored its one run in the fourth with a single and an ELC error.
ELC added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning.
Caitlyn Clayton was hit by a pitch and then stole second base. King hit a one-out single and Clayton scored when Dahl grounded out to the shortstop.
King, Dahl, Bosch and Lago each went 1-3 while Kirchner was -3. Lago had two RBIs and Bosch, Kirchner and Dahl each had one.
On the mound, Kirchner struck out 11 batters and gave up three hits with no walks.
ELC (17-4 overall, 8-1 in the Lakes Conference) plays a varsity-only game against Storm Lake at 6:30 p.m. today.
