SPENCER - Estherville Lincoln Central and Spencer were in a classic pitchers' duel through 5 1/2 innings on Monday.

The score was tied at 1-1 and the Midgets were eyeing an upset.

But then the Tigers started putting a few hits together.

"They put pressure on us in the sixth with bunts and then a kid hit a two-run home run," said ELC coach Lee Evans. "That kind of too k the wind out of our sails."

Spencer went on to a 6-1 victory.

Joe Clayton took the loss for ELC on the mound. He pitched all six innings and three of the six runs were earned. He gave up eight hits with seven strikeouts, three walks and one hit batter.

ELC had five hits.

Matt Burrell hit a solo home run in the second inning over the left field fence.

"We had other runners in scoring position, but couldn't get them in," said Evans.

Burrell, Billy Snyder, Gable Bonner and Derek Nieland all went 1-3.

Justin Frederick was 1-1.

ELC (11-13 overall, 4-6 in the Lakes Conference) is at Spirit Lake on Wednesday.
