GRANVILLE - The North Union Baseball Team came away with a runner-up finish at the Spalding Catholic Tournament this past weekend.
The Warriors reached the championship game by defeating Unity Christian 11-6 in the first round and Gehlen Catholic 3-1 in the semifinals.
In the championship game, host Spalding Catholic was waiting for the Warriors. Despite a late North Union rally, Spalding held on for a 5-4 victory.
North Union's game against Unity Christian was highlighted by a three-run home run by Brett Deitering in the second inning. He also had a two-RBI single in the fifth inning as he finished 3-4 with five RBIs.
Sawyer Doocy was the only other Warrior with more than one hit as he went 2-3 with an RBI. Brett Thackery was 1-4 with a double and two RBIs.
Evan Hagebock, Garrett Johnson, Cody Runksmeier and Alex Deitering each had one hit.
Runksmeier picked up the victory. He pitched six innings and gave up four runs (two earned) on seven hits with six strikeouts and one walk.
Zack Hurlburt pitched one inning and gave up two runs (one earned) on two hits with one strikeout and one walk.
Against Gehlen Catholic, North Union opened with a pair of runs in the first inning.
Brett Deitering drew a leadoff walk and Evan Hagebock reached on an error. Sawyer Doocy reached on a fielder's choice as the Gehlen defense took the force at second. With runners at the corners, a wild pitch allowed Deitering to score and Doocy to take second base. Garrett Johnson then came up with an RBI single.
Doocy earned the victory. In seven innings, he gave up one earned run on three hits with 12 strikeouts and two walks.
The Warriors had four hits in the contest. Johnson was 2-3 while Brett Deitering was 1-2 and Runksmeier was 1-3.
In the rematch against Spalding, North Union won 2-1 on June 12, the Warriors trailed 5-1 heading into the seventh inning.
Hurlburt was hit by a pitch and Jake Adams singled. A double by Brett Deitering scored one run. Adams scored when Evan Hagebock grounded out for the first out. Deitering scored when Johnson grounded out for the second out.
With two outs, Thackery was hit by a pitch and Johnson drew a walk, but the game ended when Runksmeier grounded out to the pitcher.
Hurlburt took the loss for the Warriors. In six innings, he gave up five earned runs on seven hits with one strikeout and one walk.
North Union had six hits in the contest.
Adams was 2-3. Johnson was 1-3 while Brett Deitering, Doocy and Runksmeier each went 1-4.
North Union (19-6 overall) hosted Harris-Lake Park in a doubleheader on Monday. The Warriors travel to Humboldt today.
