SPIRIT LAKE - With a 3-0 lead after 2 1/2 innings, Estherville Lincoln Central appeared to be in control against rival Spirit Lake on Wednesday.

But the Indians suddenly started hitting the ball in the bottom of the third inning, scoring seven runs. ELC managed just one more run after that and Spirit Lake won 9-4.

The Midgets started the scoring in the second inning when Matt Burrell reached base when Spirit Lake overthrew first base. He went to second on the play and to third when Adam Reiter grounded out to first base.

In the third inning, Tucker Milburn hit a one-out single. Two batters later, Joe Clayton crushed the ball over the left-field fence to give ELC a 3-0 lead.

Spirit Lake's No. 8 hitter, Andrew Ites, started the ball rolling for Spirit Lake in the bottom of the inning with a leadoff double. Nick Wetzler followed with a single and Milburn gave up a walk to Nic Amundson as Spirit Lake loaded the bases. A single by Brandon Stoll scored one run and a double by Paul Brown scored two more. Two more runs scored when ELC centerfielder Derek Nieland was unable to hang on to a deep hit ball by Cody Poock.

After Milburn struck out Casey Jones, he gave up his second walk to Tate Hanson. ELC got a groundout for its second out, but Ites returned to the plate and delivered a two-run single.

ELC got one run back in the fourth.

Burrell and Reiter hit consecutive singles. A wild pitch allowed them to advance and Frederick hit a sacrifice fly to right field.

The Indians added two runs in the fifth with Ites hitting a two-RBI double.

ELC had a chance to score in the sixth as Burrell was hit by a pitch and Reiter singled. But the Indians turned a 5-4-3 double play for the first two outs and a groundout ended the threat.

Milburn took the loss as he gave up nine runs on nine hits with two strikeouts, three walks and one hit batter.

Brown earned the win as he gave up four runs on eight hits with nine strikeouts and no walks.

For ELC at the plate, Milburn was 3-4 and Reiter was 2-3. Burrell was 1-2 while Freerick was 1-3 with two RBIs. Clayton was 1-3 also.
