ARMSTRONG?- The Armstrong City Council Monday night learned that the city pays the Emmet County Sheriff's Office $65,976 in general tax fund and other payments.
That amount includes $43,976 from city property taxes plus another $12,000 in direct payments to the sheriff's department and $10,000 in dispatch fees.
The calculations were made by Genevieve McGregor of McGregor Accounting in Armstrong.
For several years now, the City of Armstrong has been trying to convince the county that it shouldn't be paying the $10,000 dispatch fee.
By comparison, the total paid by other entities in the county are:
n Dolliver - $3,825.
n Estherville - $360,577.
n Gruver - $9,347.
n Ringsted - $20,515.
n Wallingford - $7,777.
n Unincorporated - $567,333.
In other business, the council decided it wanted to meet again with representatives of Leo Pelds Engineering Company of Des Moines regarding the city's cost-share for a storm sewer for Casey's General Stores. The council had earlier indicated it would pick up half the cost with the understanding its share would be $40,000. However, engineering plans it recently received indicated the city's share would be double that - with no apparent provision for the city to tie into the storm sewer. Public works director Tom Leach said the city couldn't benefit if it couldn't tie into the storm sewer.
Leach also presented the council with a list of deficiencies noted by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources in a January sanitary survey. Recommendations include repairing the old water tower, having a relief person for the city water plant, and the city fluoride system. The council took note that police chief Craig Merrill could be the weekend relief person in his assigned public works duties. The council also decided to do away with its fluoride system since city water already meets minimum fluoride standards without the system.
The council renewed HiWay Grocery's beer license renewal and Sunday sales.
The council also discussed a two-mile jurisdiction around the city.
