PERRY - The Algona High School Girls Swim Team traveled to Perry on Thursday and opened the season with a split in their double dual swim meet.
The team fell to Des Moines Lincoln 67-27. The 200 medley and 200 free relay teams both finished second and the team consisted of Erica Carlson, Hannah Priest, Alyssa Williams and Maddie Stubbs.
Priest took first in the 50 free and 100 breast stroke while seconds went to Stubbs in the 200 individual medley and Leah Hamilton in the 100 free.
"This was a big improvement over last year as we scored 12 points more against them, which was a goal of the team going in to be more competitive," said coach Jim Fisher.
Algona beat Perry 49-45.
The 200 medley team, 200 free and 400 free relay teams all finished second. The 200 relay team consisted of Amber Schacherer, Emma Plathe, Kandice Roethler and MacKenzie Wilson while the 400 team was Hamilton, Schacherer, Carlson and Emily McMahon. Second-place finishes went to Hamilton in the 200 and 100 free, Stubbs in the 200 individual medley, and 100 fly and Carlson in the 100 back.
Taking first were the 200 free relay team of Carlson, Priest, Williams and Stubbs, Priest in the 50 free and 100 breast stroke and Nicole Kenne in the 200 and 500 free.
"It was good to get this one because we had a lot of new and different lineups and we were able to see different girls in competition," said Fisher. "We had five new swimmers in the lineups and they all did well.
"In fact the junior varsity also won by a 33-16 score."
The 200 medley relay team of Casey Harms, McMahon, Conneer Yi and Emma Plathe placed first as did the 200 free team of Harms, McMahon, Yi and Justin Yeoman. Individual firsts went to Plathe in the 50 free, Harms in the 100 back, McMahon in the 100 breast stroke and Yi in the 100 fly.
