SPIRIT LAKE - Most people didn't expect returning Class 2A state runner-up Spirit Lake to have much trouble with in-county rival Okoboji.
The Indians didn't disappoint in a 56-14 victory over the Pioneers.
Spirit Lake used 17 different ball carriers, who combined to rush for 372 yards and six touchdowns on 40 attempts.
The longest run was a 45-yard touchdown run by Casey Spaeth. Brandon Stoll carried the ball four times for 41 yards and two touchdowns, including a 21-yard jaunt. Tyler Peterson scored on a 29-yard touchdown run on his only carry of the game. Bryson McCabe rushed two times for 28 yards including a 12-yard touchdown run. Cody Poock also rushed two times for 25 yards including a 14-yard touchdown run.
Starting quarterback Paul Brown was 2-of-4 passing for 65 yards with both completions going for a touchdown. Nick Admundson had a 35-yard touchdown catch and Andrew Ites had a 30-yard touchdown reception.
Sophomore quarterback Alec Henrickson was 3-4 passing for 75 yards. Stoll was 1-1 for 14 yards.
Auston Folsom caught one pass for 17 yards, Trevor Jensen caught one pass for 14 yards, JD Mitchell caught one for nine yards and Kenten Murray caught one for 6 yards.
Brett Cochran-Bray converted all eight point-after attempts. He also kicked off seven times with five touchbacks.
Defensively, the Indians caused five turnovers. Amundson, Max Kruse and Paul Woizeschke each had an interception. Tyler Alger and Jacob Jenness each recovered a fumble.
Spirit Lake (1-0) is on the road against Storm Lake on Friday.
