Although the Estherville Lincoln Central Volleyball Team followed a pattern that most coaches wouldn't advocate, it worked for the Midgets Tuesday in their home opener against Bishop Garrigan.

ELC swept the visiting Golden Bears 3-0. However in each game, the Midgets built a lead, watched the visitors put together a late rally and then the home team hung on for the victory. Scores were 25-21, 25-23 and 25-23.

"We obviously have a few things we need to fix, but our communication and ball control were both better tonight," said ELC coach Tyler Johnson. "I also liked the way we played with the lead. But I'd like to see us earn our game-point points though."

In game one, the Midgets built an 18-14 lead and then the visitors scored five straight points to lead 19-8. ELC responded with a 7-2 run that ended on a Bishop Garrigan hitting error.

In the second game, ELC built leads twice. The Midgets led 12-5 early and Garrigan rallied to tie the match at 13-13.

After a timeout, the Bears' serve went long and ELC responded with a 9-2 run ending which included a block by Tayler Bodle, a kill and an ace serve by Casey Sievert and kills by Allie Sievert and Bodle.

Once again the Bears rallied and closed within a point, 24-23, before committing another error.

ELC trailed 8-6 in game three but the hosts went to work with a 12-3 run to lead 18-11.

ELC maintained the edge and appeared in control after a kill by Paige Guge made the score 23-15. The Midgets couldn't put the visitors away though. The Bears went on a 6-0 run before a service error gave ELC match point at 24-21.

Garrigan then scored two points including a block against Guge.

The match ended though when the next serve went long.

Guge led ELC with nine kills while Allie Sievert had six and Megan Jensen and Casey Sievert each had four. Casey Sievert had 10 aces while Jensen had two.

Serving, Allie Sievert was 18-of-18 with an ace and Katie Gruhlke was 12of-12 serving with an ace.

Jensen had two blocks and Bodle had one.

ELC (1-1 overall) hosts North Union on Thursday, Sept. 6.
