Fire weather watch issued

NWS warns northern Iowa counties to be cautious this Thursday

August 28, 2012
Estherville Daily News

The National Weather Service in Des Moines has issued a fire weather watch for northern Iowa including Emmet, Kossuth and Palo Alto counties for Thursday afternoon through Thursday evening.

A fire weather watch means that critical fire weather conditions are forecast to occur.

For Thursday, they include southwest winds at 15-25 miles per hour with gusts of 35 mph.

Drying of grasses as well as field crops is also under way and ahead of schedule given the hot and dry conditions this summer.

Any fires that start will spread rapidly due to the low relative humidity, dry fuels and strong winds.
