SPENCER - Two years ago the women's soccer team at Iowa Lakes Community College struggled through a season that would see them win only one game. Last year the team improved dramatically and posted an overall record of 11-7-2. This year the team has started off well and just this last weekend won the biggest game in the programs history defeating Johnson County Community College 2-1. The win marks the first time that the women's team has defeated a ranked opponent and apparently the start to the season hasn't gone unnoticed.
"I'm very surprised by the ranking and although I feel we are a solid team I'm not putting a lot of stock in the ranking right now," said Iowa Lakes coach Ammon Bennett. "All it really means at this point is how far the team has advanced in the last 18 months. We were able to bring in some solid recruits (17 new ladies this year) along with some very good returners from last year. It's exciting for Iowa Lakes and the school and in reality all of our sports teams.
"We hope to continue to improve and hopefully this weekend we will be able to compete against two of the top teams in the nation in Iowa Western and Laramie County who are ranked 4th and 18th nationally," Bennett concluded
