FOREST CITY - Class 2A No. 3 Spirit Lake had its biggest test of the season taking on No. 9 Forest City in the district opener for both teams.
The Indians' defense proved the difference in the 17-0 shutout.
Spirit Lake took a 10-0 half-time lead.
The first score came in n the second quarter when quarterback Paul Brown connected with Tyler Petersen on a 30-yard strike.
Before half, Petersen picked off Forest City quarterback Tate Thompson which set up a 42-yard field goal by Brett Cochran-Bray.
Casey Spaeth added the insurance score in the third quarter on a 58-yard punt return.
Cody Poock led the Indians' ground attack with 127 yards on 21 carries. Bryson McCabe had 59 yards on 18 carries and Brown had 31 yards on 10 carries.
Brown was 6-of-15 passing for 47 yards.
Spaeth caught two passes for 7 yards while Zach Arneson caught one for 6 yards and Andrew Ites caught one for 4 yards.
McCabe led the defense with eight tackles while Brady Mart had six and Poock, Spaeth and Brandon Stoll each had five.
Cody Norton, Petersen and Trystan Wiedow each had a sack. Poock recovered a fumble.
Forest City was limited to 15 yards passing and 25 yards rushing. Forest City did recover three Spirit Lake fumbles.
Spirit Lake (3-0 overall, 1-0 in the district) hosts Garner-Hayfield for the Indians' Homecoming on Friday.
