Fort Defiance State Park got some major TLC Tuesday night when students from Gary Phillips' environmental studies program and members of the Friends of Fort Defiance came out in force for al all-around cleanup and beautification.
Nick and Josh Young and Matt Gathercole pulled together a sizable cadre of volunteers for their Americorps Volunteer Generated Project. Phillips is also president of the Friends of Fort Defiance.
Work included all-around litter pickup around the lodge, picnic area and throughout the park.
Dylan Dalton, Columbia, Iowa, Matt Gathercole, Ocheyedan, and Dustin Pronk, Jackson, Minn., stained picnic tables in the campground area. Dalton and Pronk are current students and Gathercole is a former student of Gary Phillips’, environmental studies director at Iowa Lakes Community College and president of the Friends of Fort Defiance. Gathercole helped round up volunteers for his Americorps Volunteer Generated Project.

Crews also trimmed trees and brush along the Spring Creek and School Creek trails.
Volunteers also scraped and stained picnic tables in the campground area.
The work was done in anticipation of the second annual Fort Defiance Day 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 6, in conjunction with the Estherville Area Chamber of Commerce October Fun Run/Walk which will follow starting at 4:45 p.m.
