Students in the surgical technology program at Iowa Lakes Community College will be observing the week of Sept. 22-26 as National Surgical Technology week. The theme for this year's celebration is "Cutting Edge Professionals."
As a kick-off to the week, surg tech students will host an open house on Thursday, Sept. 20, from 4-6 p.m. in recognition of Surgical Technology Week. The students' children and families, as well as the public, will have the opportunity to tour the new surgical technology area at the Spencer campus of Iowa Lakes. Their intention is to educate individuals - both inside and outside the profession - of the role and importance of the Certified Surgical Technologist.
Those attending will be treated to snacks, games and skills demonstrations as well as tours of the surgical suites at the college.
Something new to the program this fall is a designated Facebook page that will connect students with veteran surgical rechnologists from all over the country currently practicing in the field. Students gain insight and valuable information from the mentors and previous graduates.
In addition, the program benefits from a local connection.
"We are very grateful for the preceptors at all of our area hospitals who allow our students to learn from their staff about the role of a surgical technologist," said Dana Grafft, coordinator and instructor for the program. "Without the help and support of the preceptors and our area hospitals, our program would not be possible."
Those attending will see the latest upgrades.
"Our new laboratory space provides surgical technology students with real-world experience and surgical simulation opportunities that help to better prepare them for actual operating room experiences," said Grafft.
The surgical technology program is based at the Spencer campus of Iowa Lakes Community College. The program is currently in its 12th year of operation and is nationally accredited through The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
