Friends finalize plans for Fort Defiance Day

October 2, 2012
By Michael Tidemann - Staff Writer , Estherville Daily News

Friends of Fort Defiance members met at the park Tuesday night to iron out plans for the second annual Fort Defiance Day 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. this Saturday at the park lodge.

There will be 11 tables and exhibits outdoors plus some indoor activities, with plenty of things for people of all ages to enjoy.

Something new this year will be "Coffee Memories" before the fireplace. There will be free coffee and folks are asked to sit and share their memories of the park. Do you remember the toboggan run? How about the CCC? Or how about family picnics or reunions in the park? Whatever your memories, you're encouraged to share them.

Also inside the lodge, there will be slide presentations of nature photography. So look for nature photos of inside the park as well as from around the country.

Raffle tickets will also be sold for a J.D. Speltz print the day of the event. Tickets are $2 each or three for $5 with all proceeds going to park improvements. And you don't need to be present to win.

For the kids, there will be a scavenger hunt with prizes for kids who find eight of the 12 items from nature.

Barb Tagami, Dickinson County naturalist, will talk about natural edibles and Boy Scouts will be cooking with a Dutch oven.

Rebecca Masters will talk about organic gardening and Bob Isebrand will be there with his woodcarvings.

Friends president Gary Phillips will be fly tying and so will a number of his environmental studies students from Iowa Lakes Community College who will have presentations on West Nile virus and lyme disease, native trees, invasive species and other presentations.
