All right, it's starting to look like fall - maybe with a hint of winter, even. But that doesn't mean there's not a lot to do in the area this weekend.
If you haven't heard yet, the second annual Fort Defiance Day will be held at the lodge at Fort Defiance State Park from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6. Look for all kinds of great, informative and educational programs and exhibits and a great meal of pulled pork sandwiches, chips, bar and a drink for just $5. All proceeds go to help with park improvements by the Friends of Fort Defiance.
Held in conjunction with the event at the lodge will be the Octoberfest, co-sponsored by the Estherville Area Chamber of Commerce and the Friends group. A 5K run/walk starts at 5 p.m. Register at Estherville org. A picnic will follow from 5:30-6:30 p.m. with brats, op and s'mores followed by live music by Brad Morgan from 6:30-9:30 p.m.
The Artisans Road Trip comes to the area again, with focal points in Estherville and the Lakes area. This year's road trip will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Look for area artists at the Pearson Lakes Art Center at 2201 Highway 71, Okoboji; A Piece of Work, Inc. at 1619 Hill Ave. in Spirit Lake; Dykema Studios at 1720 Hill Ave. in Spirit Lake; Art on 16th at 709 16th St. in Spirit Lake and at 15657 250th Ave., Spirit Lake.
Held in conjunction with the Artisans road trip will be the Iowa Lakes Community Foundation Fine Arts Scholarship Fundraiser which will also be held Saturday at the Pearson Lakes Art Center. The social starts at 5:30 p.m. featuring live entertainment and live suction at 7 p.m. The silent auction closes at 8 p.m. Sample selections from brewers and wineries with hors d'oeuvres by Cabernet Catering and dessert available from Playful Cupcaketions. And then there's the Fabulous 50's Anniversary Party for Carolyn and John Walz 7-11 p.m. Saturday at the Estherville Elks Lodge with music by The Senders. Carol and John are requesting no cards, candy, flowers or gifts. Note cards for your greetings will be available at the guest book table and 50's attire is appropriate. So come on up the hill for a great time.
And if all that isn't enough, there's the Funtime Rodeo and Cowboy Challenge at 7 p.m. Saturday at the I-90 Expo at 1010 70th Ave. in Sherburn, Minn. There will be a chicken catch, wild horse catch, chute dogging, spoiled ranch horse riding, muttin bustin, sheep dressing and dog races (join the fun and bring your dog. Admission is $10 for kids and 12 and under are free.
