As one of the top teams in Class 2A, it's not surprise that Spirit Lake garnered 13 player awards along other voted awards including the top offensive player, top defensive player, top kicker and head and assistant coaches of the year in Class 2A District 2.
Coach Josh Bolluyt's Indians swept through district play with a 6-0 record and are making their second straight trip to the UNI-Dome with a chance at a state title.
Senior quarterback Paul Brown was named offensive MVP of the district while senior Cody Poock was named defensive MVP of the district.
In district play, Brown was 44-of-76 passing for 739 yards with 13 touchdowns and two interceptions. He also rushed 36 times for 152 yards and two touchdowns.
Poock could have been selected on either side of the ball. Defensively, he finished with 57 tackles including 17 for a loss and five sacks. Twenty-nine were solo tackles. Offensively, he ran the ball 64 times for 567 yards. He also caught nine passes for 215 passes. Combined, he scored 14 touchdowns.
Brett Cochran-Bray earned first team honors as a kicker. He had 42 kickoffs for 2,335 yards with 19 touchbacks. He made 2-of-3 field goals with the longest going 42 yards. He made 32-of-33 point-after attempts.
Seven other Indians earned first team all-district honors-senior defensive back Bryson McCabe (29 tackles-five for loss, one interception), senior linebacker Rick Maris (18 tackles-one for loss and a fumble recovery), senior receiver Casey Spaeth (13 receptions, 240 yards, 5 TDs), junior offensive lineman Tanner Kroon, senior offensive lineman Brady Mart, senior linebacker Brandon Stoll (19 tackles-three for loss, one fumble recovery) and senior defensive lineman Cody Norton (19 tackles-three for a loss, two sacks, two fumble recoveries).
Earning second team honors were junior offensive lineman Sam Harris, senior linebacker Tyler Petersen (24 tackle-five for a loss, one interception), senior defensive back Zach Arneson (four tackles, one interception) and senior receiver Andrew Ites (eight receptions for 106 yards and one touchdown).
Earning honorable mention were senior defensive back Nick Amudson (eight tackles, two interceptions) and senior offensive lineman Trystan Wiedow.
Fourteen Spirit Lake players earned all-academic honors-seniors Brandon Stoll, Trystan Wiedow, Andrew Ites, Rick Maris, Josh McQueen, Tyler Petersen, Paul Brown and Ben Chapman along with juniors Tyler Alger, Dan Chapman Sam Harris, Logan Sorensen, Jacob Jenness and Kenten Murray.
Bolluyt was named 2A District Coach of the Year. Spirit Lake's Terry Bruinsma was named 2A District Assistant Coach of the Year.
