UDMO requests funding

November 20, 2012
By Michael Tidemann - Staff Writer , Estherville Daily News

Officials from Upper Des Moines Opportunity, Inc., asked the Emmet County Board of Supervisors Tuesday to continue in fiscal 2014 the current level of support the county is giving the nonprofit agency.

Cinda Joynt, outreach center director, and Jamey Whitney, executive director, asked the board for $14,977. They cited figures showing that for each county dollar received the agency brings $87.51 of local, state and federal assistance into the county. UDMO served 1,372 individuals in 580 households last year, 57 percent of whom were below poverty guidelines.

Joynt and Whitney noted a long list of programs for which UDMO has been responsible, giving credit to the many local hospitals, schools and churches that have helped.

"We definitely approach things differently in Iowa than we do in other states, We take care of our own," Whitney said.
