Heelan too much for Indians

SIOUX CITY - Class 3A No. 4 Spirit Lake suffered its first loss of the season to Class 4A top-ranked Bishop Heelan 67-57 on Saturday.

Heelan's Megan McCarthy scored 11 of her game-high 20 points in the first quarter in which the Crusaders took a 31-15 lead. Heelan also was 6-of-8 from 3-point range.

Heelan shot 60.6 percent (20-of-33) while building a 51-27 halftime lead.

K.J. Veldman led Spirit Lake with 14 points. Bailey Loveall finished with nine points and eight rebounds while Emma Dau had eight points. Allisa Christoffer finished with six while Abbey Horsman had four and Kendra Stokke had two.

Spirit Lake finished 6-of-15 from 3-point range while Heelan was 10-of-23.

Spirit Lake (1-1 overall) is home against Hinton this evening.
