Midgets run past Tigers

A. Sievert scores 27 for ELC

Class 3A No. 3 Estherville Lincoln Central faced a physical team in hosting Spencer, but the Midgets were more than enough for the challenge.

ELC kept building and building throughout the night and came away with a 71-37 victory over the Tigers.

"They gave us some problems early on," said ELC coach Tony Klein. "But I told the girls the second half and the fourth quarter was where we were going to pull away."

ELC trailed early, 3-2 after Spencer's Kelsey Rolfes hit a 3-pointer.

But ELC put together an 11-0 run that started inside with baskets by Allie Sievert and Emily Kirchner. Casey Sievert then hit a3-pointer and Maggie McCauley drove inside for a layup.

Allie Sievert completed the run by beating her defender down the court and receiving the pass from McCauley on a cut to the basket.

Spencer scored three free throws to end the first quarter as ELC led 13-6.

Macy Dahl opened the second quarter with a 3-pointer to push the lead back to 10 and ELC kept building from there. Some steals led to three layups for Sara Heywood, Casey Sievert and McCauley as ELC stretched the lead to 14, 29-15.

Allie Sievert scored the final five points of the half on a layup and three-point play as ELC led 34-19 at the break.

ELC scored the first six points of the second half with Allie Sievert scoring five of them including a 3-pointer from the top of the key. ELC kept pushing and Heywood and McCauley both hit 3-pointers in the period to pull away to a 57-29 advantage.

Most of ELC's starters went to the bench with about 5 minutes left in the game. Megan Jensen scored six straight points and Caitlyn Clayton hit a layup as part of an 8-0 run near the end of the game for ELC's biggest advantage at 71-34.

Allie Sievert led ELC with 27 points while Kirchner finished with 10. McCauley had eight while Casey Sievert and Heywood each had seven, Jensen had six, Dahl had four and Clayton had two.

ELC was 10-for-17 from the free throw line. The Midgets committed seen turnovers.

Spencer's Heather Williamson led her team with 10 points.

ELC?(5-1 overall, 2-0 in the Lakes Conference) travels to Storm?lake on Tuesday.
