Iowa Lakes to offer event management program

Starting fall 2013, anyone who wants a career in event management can get the needed training right in our area.

Iowa Lakes Community College will offer a new event management program starting fall 2013 at the Spirit Lake campus. According to Heather Asmus, Spirit Lake campus supervisor, the three-semester program is pending Iowa Department of Education approval.

The training will prepare students for careers in wedding planning, travel, hosting special and professional events, catering and other areas involving event management.

Courses include:

n Fundamentals of event planning.

n Business communications.

n Office procedures.

n Introduction to computers.

n Human relations.

n Introductory practicum.

n Introduction to accounting.

n Audio/visual systems.

n Site selection.

n Special events.

n Wedding planning.

n Catering.

n Business law.

n Intermediate practicum.

n Fundraising events.

n Travel and transportation.

n Public speaking.

n Principles of marketing.

n Capstone project.

n Capstone practicum.

Students may also select from one of the following electives:

n Principles of selling.

n Principles of advertising.

n Spanish for professionals.

n Dreamweaver level I.

n Digital imaging.

Asmus expects 20-25 students.

The course concept grew out of a focus group at the Spirit Lake campus that saw a need for the program. Asmus said the program will be very internship based. "We'll definitely be adding to the program as we move forward," Asmus explained.

Anyone who is personable and likes meeting with people and networking should thrive in this exciting new program. A business background is not required.
