Top 5 Midget Milestones of 2012

December 27, 2012
by David Swartz - Managing Editor , Estherville Daily News

The Estherville Daily News has selected the top five Estherville Lincoln Central sports stories of 2012.

All five are rare occurrences in Midget school history. Here they are in chronological order:

Two ELC wrestlers medal at state

After an eight-year hiatus on the medal stand, two ELC wrestlers made the cut at the 2012 state tournament.

Sophomore Oscar Ramirez took sixth place in the Class 2A 120-pound bracket while 2012 Lakes Conference Heavyweight Champion, senior Gable Bonner, finished seventh.

Ramirez ended his season with a 36-7 mark and in is undefeated through his junior season prior to the Christmas break.

Bonner ended his high school career with a pin in the seventh-place match and finished with a 37-5 record. He took his talents to Buena Vista University.

ELC makes second straight trip to girls state basketball tournament

A trip to the girls state basketball tournament is not an easy task.

During the six-player era, Estherville was a state qualifier in 1979 and a state champion in 1982.

In the five-player error, ELC finished second in 1999.

The Midgets made their second consecutive trip to the state tournament in 2012 following a second-place finish in Class 2A in 2011.

While the 2012 tournament ended in a first-round, two-point loss to Lakes Conference rival Western Christian, ELC showed it again was one of the best teams in the state.

With six experienced seniors on the squad, the Midgets will attempt to make their third consecutive trip to the state tournament in 2013. They're off to an 8-1 start with their only loss to second-ranked MOC-Floyd Valley.

While the move to five classes puts ELC in Class 3A where they won't see Western Christian in the postseason, the third-ranked Midgets will have to contend with the Dutch from MOC-Floyd Valley and defending Class 3A champion Davenport Assumption.

Blomquist runs

second-fastest open 800 in school history

A runner from Estherville hasn't run an 800-meter race as fast as Alex Blomquist did at the 2012 State Meet since 1984.

Blomquist, a senior, didn't medal but finished the event in 2 minutes, 0.64 seconds to place 11th.

While hoping to break 2 minutes, the only other runner in Estherville history to run faster was John Heyer in 1984. His time is 1:57 in the event. Three other runners have run the event in under 2:03-Jeff Moreau (2:02.41993), Matt Juhl (2:02.52008); and Vic Morales (2:02.91992).

ELC places fourth at state softball tourney

A year after finishing fifth at the 2011 Class 2A state softball tournament, ELC's goal was to finish higher in 2012.

The Midgets accomplished the feat behind ace pitcher Kendall Bosch as the team finished fourth in Class 3A. Bosch finished with over 200 strikeouts on the season and earned a second consecutive nomination to the state softball all-tournament team.

ELC opened the tournament with an 8-2 win over East Marshall, but then lost 1-0 to top-ranked Slon in the Class 3A semifinals. In the third-place game, ELC fell 2-1 to Bondurant-Farrar.

Sievert is second player to score 1,000 points

In the five-player era, there are now two Estherville Lincoln Central players who have scored more than 1,000 points.

Senior Allie Sievert reached the milestone on Dec. 14 in a 61-13 home victory over Cherokee.

2008 ELC graduate Christa Clayton was the first to reach the 1,000-point milestone and finished her career with 1,158 points while scoring 408 points her senior season.

Eight Estherville players scored more than 1,000 points during the six-player era.
