More than $25,000 dollars have been injected back into the Estherville economy thanks to the Estherville Bucks program.
In 2012, $26,290 in Estherville Bucks were sold to community members and businesses. Estherville Bucks are an initiative of the Estherville Area Chamber of Commerce, and the program aims to encourage local shopping to strengthen the area's economy and support business growth.
The amount of Estherville Bucks sold in 2012 well exceeded the $13,000 in Estherville Bucks sold in 2011. Stephanie Neppl, Estherville Area Chamber of Commerce executive director, attributes the increase to simple communication about the program.
"We sent out a media release and then emailed all of our members to remind them of the program and that they were able to participate and of course purchase the bucks for employees. This led to many large orders of the Estherville Bucks to give as Christmas gifts from a number of businesses," Neppl said. "We sold $20,000 of bucks in November and December, compared with $6,500 during that period the year before."
The bucks can be used at participating Estherville Area Chamber of Commerce members, and they work just like cash so there is no extra step for shoppers or the businesses.
"They are like a big gift certificate for the town," Neppl said. "We want the Estherville Bucks to be well used and recognized, so to that end we will be creating stickers for participating businesses to put in their windows to help build awareness."
