The Emmet County Wellness Coalition Monday afternoon at the Iowa Lakes Electric Cooperative Community Room laid plans for this year's Lifestyle Challenge - sponsored by Avera Holy Family Health and the Regional Wellness Center.

Registration is at the RWC, and those who preregister by Wednesday before Friday's kickoff will be assured of having a binder filled with materials waiting. Those who register later might have to wait a bit for their binders.

Jen Hough, Avera Holy Family Health community relations manager, said the binders will include information about Planet Heart, a list of weigh-in dates and lots of other information, including a food journal, tips on healthy eating, stress reduction and other topics.

Participants who register Friday will get weighed, meet with a dietician and have a Body Mass Index taken.

Hough asked all coalition members to promote their businesses and noted that anyone with promotional items that would be suitable for prizes can bring them to the RWC.

While the Lifestyle Challenge is the most immediate goal, discussion at Monday's meeting soon turned to what the coalition can do in the future - especially for youth.

Hough suggested a joint parent-child education program might be one strategy, with sessions such as a cooking class for parents and kids. Another idea might be to find activities that might get kids away from television and video games.

Tara Paul, ELC superintendent, suggested that after the Lifestyle Challenge a similar challenge could be offered for kids.

Paul suggested one focus group for kids might be the Energizer program for kids in grades three through six at the RWC. She said there are 40 kids currently in the program with room for 50.

Kathy Preston, Emmet County Public Health director, said the Iowa Tobacco Alliance wants to partner with the coalition.

Preston suggested the coalition could also invite members from the mental health and Latino communities to participate in coalition projects.
