MASON?CITY?- The 17th ranked Iowa Lakes wrestling team posted a 2-1 record at the Super Duals in Mason City on Friday.
The Lakers lost 28-25 to the Grandview Junior Varsity but defeated eighth-ranked Ridgewater 31-15 and Rochester, Minn., 27-24.
A highlight of the day came at 157 pounds as James Smith beat the top-ranked wrestler in the nation, Ridgewater's Shane Fessenmaker, by a 15-7 major decision.
"James has struggled from time to time with finding himself on the mat," said Iowa Lakes coach Cody Alesch. "Today he showed the potential he has with a convincing win over a very quality wrestler."
Also Nick Lawrence, ranked fourth at 174 pounds, Cody Cline and Skyler Rice, ranked sixth at 133 pounds, all posted 3-0 records.
"We did some good things today but also saw some areas we need to improve on," said Alesch. "We need to get better off the whistle on bottom and increase our intensity with more physical wrestling. We were more physical later in the day and we wrestled at a higher level immediately when we did that."
