Wellness Coalition sees successful Lifestyle Challenge

February 6, 2013
By Michael Tidemann - Staff Writer , Estherville Daily News

With over 300 participating, it appears that this year's Lifestyle Challenge is off to a great start.

That's the news that the Emmet County Wellness Coalition received from Jen Hough, Avera Holy Family Hospital community relations manager, who is co-coordinating the Challenge this year with Bob Grems, Regional Wellness Center director.

Tina Bauermeister, Avera Holy Family Hospital dietician, noted a good response with weekly weigh-ins as well. In previous Lifestyle Challenges, weigh-ins were monthly.

Hough also said healthy recipes and handouts were a big hit, as well as the featured Workout of the Week. "It's been a great partnership with the Wellness Center," Hough said.

Beyond the Lifestyle Challenge, Wellness Coalition chair and Emmet County Public Health director Kathy Preston said the Coalition is trying to find ideas for activities for school-age kids.

Estherville Lincoln Central superintendent Tara Paul said she wanted to look at expanding the after-school program at the RWC and look at possibilities with the Estherville Public Library, something Preston said might be a good project for an Emmet County Community Foundation grant.

Preston also broached the subject of a spring community walk - possibly at Fort Defiance.

Other possible walks members discussed were at the end of the Lifestyle Challenge and the Couch to 5K program at the library.

Attention also turned to other health aspects. Emmet County mental health coordinator Dorothy Christensen noted employers are cutting employee hours to get under the minimum required to provide health insurance required for full-time employees under the Affordable Care Act.

Members also discussed the upcoming Dave Ramsey financial Peace University. A meeting will be held 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26 at Pizza Hut in Estherville.
