Time to be a fan

February 8, 2013
Estherville Daily News

This is the time of year when it's a good time to be a fan.

Area basketball players and wrestlers try to continue their season all the way to the state tournament-or if they lose go home to reflect on the season.

Estherville Lincoln Central fans have one final home game to cheer on the girls basketball team as they host Algona at 7 p.m. tonight. The winner plays in Algona on Wednesday.

The ELC boys basketball team doesn't start the playoffs until Monday, Feb. 18 against MOC-Floyd Valley in Orange City. By that time, the girls will know if they are headed to state or not.

Five ELC wrestlers head to Spencer at noon today to try to earn their way to the state tournament. They are Oscar Ramirez, Thomas Bortvit, Blake Gjerde, Billy Snyder and Chase Bonner. It's a short trip to cheer on these wrestlers, so if you have some time, wrestling starts at noon. Six Spirit Lake Park wrestlers are also in Spencer while three Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire wrestlers are at the district meet in Milford today.

For other area fans, more playoff action continues this week.

Spirit Lake is also home with Sheldon tonight.

The North Union and Spirit Lake boys play each other in a Class 2A first-round game in Spirit Lake on Monday.

The North Union girls have a home game in Armstrong against either Emmetsburg or Pocahontas.

Last but not least, the Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire boys open tournament play on Thursday at Trinity Christian in Hull.

Hats off to the GTRA girls team for nearly pulling off an upset in the 1A first-round against Clay Central-Everly on Thursday night.

So whatever your team, get out a cheer on these young athletes.
